The Jacket Competition

This is our most current event and it happens to be a ballroom competition, right after a post about a ballroom competition. Lucky you!

Daisy is taking the ballroom class at school. She is actually really fortunate to have gotten in. Most seventh graders don't get to take ballroom. I wasn't sure how much they would be doing because of Covid, but they had a mostly normal team match this last weekend.

I say mostly normal because it was split into 3 sessions and all the kids wore masks, and families were only allowed to buy one ticket to start off with. So it wasn't quite normal. 

Beth was hosting a dance competition of her own, so she asked if I could take Henry. Yes, Henry took ballroom (it's easier for 7th grade boys to get in) and yep, he and Daisy were assigned as partners. That must be kind of nice, since they are very used to each other.

Daisy was on the green team. So she was sporting a green ribbon.

 Her first dance with Henry was swing. They have danced this a lot, so it was second nature. Daisy was so relaxed, she forgot to take off her jacket. She was cold, so it just made sense to keep wearing it. When her number was called, she took Henry's hand and they walked out on the floor. Ivory and I yelled and screamed trying to get their attention, but they just thought we were cheering for them. 

So she danced the entire Swing with her jacket on. They did a great job. Daisy noticed somewhere along the way that she was wearing the jacket, but Henry never noticed. 

Daisy did take her jacket off when she sat back down, but it didn't go far since she was still cold. She also was helpful getting Henry's numbers off and on since he was dancing with two partners.

The second dance was drawn from a hat and Daisy and Henry drew Waltz. I'm not sure that is their favorite, but it might be mine. It was lovely.

The whole event had a different atmosphere than usual. The bleachers were for the schools so they could spread out the kids and up above were the parents. In reality, there weren't that many spectators. We were allowed one ticket per family. Bethany gave us hers since they couldn't come, so I brought Ivory with me. I believe they opened up more tickets that morning, but we didn't purchase more. You could also purchase a ticket to watch online, but it was twice the price. But I believe you could watch it as much as you wanted. 

There was also a High School Paso Doble competition. It was really fun to watch them practice and dance. We picked out our favorite and cheered for our couple #117.

They had fewer couples come back on the floor each time, but our couple was always in there. And in the end, when they did awards for the top 8 couples, our couple came in FIRST! I feel like I was instrumental in their win, but really, they were just awesome.

There were two floor shows, which are always fun. I really loved the Smooth Waltz couple who dressed in airline outfits and did a number called Fly Away With Me. They had some great lifts and beautiful dancing.

The Samba couple was equally impressive. They moved so quickly but I was sad there were no lifts. I know that isn't what makes a dance great, but they are so cool to watch.

Then it was time for Junior High awards. Our school had three teams. Aqua team got Bronze. Green and Hot Pink both got GOLD which was really cool for them. They also give a trophy to the team that got highest gold. It was a tie this year which rarely happens so they had to go back and figure out a winner. I leaned over to Ivory and said that they probably bumped Green Team down just a little because of the jacket. Then they announced that Hot Pink was the winner and the team that had tied with them was Green. So our school teams had tied for first. Pretty cool. And who knows? Maybe Daisy's jacket was the deciding factor. The teams were super happy about their win.

We let Henry and Daisy hold the trophy since it was practically theirs.
