Since it is Halloween today, I figured I would do a post to go along with the theme. We carved our pumpkins just a few days ago, so let's share our spooky designs.
We usually carve the Monday before Halloween, so the pumpkins are still mostly intact by the time we get Trick-or-Treaters. But this time we did it on Sunday because June has been working a lot of Monday evenings.
Camie and Nate came and carved with us. The littles still need a bit of help getting going, but everyone else just sat down and did their thing. It was an enjoyable evening with creativity and a lot of guts...pumpkin guts that is.
I tried something I haven't done before and it didn't turn out quite like I wanted, but I was still happy with the end result. But it took forever. I think I'll stick to regular carving next year.
Camie and Nate lit their pumpkins and had to leave before I finished, but they sent me pictures of their lit creations.
In fact, some of the kids were in bed by the time I finished my pumpkin, so we took pictures the next day holding our designs.
They all look fabulous at night. Tyler has gotten really good at taking glowing pictures. I love June's mummy. Cutting up a pumpkin in slices is harder than you think.
Everyone did a great job! Although I don't love pumpkin guts (they make me itch), this is one of my favorite family activities of the year.

Confetti Forever
We adore Camie and Nate. They are just the best people ever. Quirky and kind and fun to be around. So we were over the moon when they told us they were expecting.
Best. News. Ever.
They are going to rock being parents. When they found out the gender of their baby, Camie texted me and told me, but I decided to surprise the girls. So Camie and Nate came over one day and we had balloons for girls to pop.
Make your guesses now.
Did you guess correctly? You had a fifty-fifty chance.
If you heard in the video, only Pearl and I guessed right. The other kids thought she would have a girl. But we are thrilled for Camie and Nate and we can't wait to meet their baby boy.
There was so much glitter and it doesn't really go anywhere. Pearl played in it like a pile of leaves.
Some people put it in their hair.
A month later, there is still plenty of glitter out there. I'm guessing it's not the most environment friendly material, but Camie and Nate don't have a baby every day. And I like glitter. I don't mind finding sparkly blue circles all over the place. It just remind me again that these two are going to be great parents.

Robin Hood
After we did The Three Princes we decided to take a break from theater for a while. Pam told us she would be doing more plays, but it took up so much time before, we couldn't imagine doing another one. So when she told us she was holding auditions for Robin Hood, we all just smiled and put the thought out of our minds. Then she emailed me and said she really needed someone of Ivory or Daisy's size to play a kid. The problem was that school was starting and I knew the girls would be so busy. But actually Ivory had nothing going on. So she auditioned and got the part of Heathcliff, a know-it-all boy.
And she was back into the crazy schedule of being gone every night at rehearsals. This time I didn't have to go as well, but I still had to drive her often. I finally bribed her to find her own rides. If she got enough rides, I would buy her ice cream. She is highly motivated by ice cream, and she fulfilled her part of the bargain, so I fulfilled mine.
Pam had reserved the Castle Amphitheater again. When they started rehearsing there, I took a picture from up above. They had most of the stage up, but they still had a bit to do. It is a lot of work to get the sets up. I believe everything blew down one night. Amazingly, the show went on for ten nights and it didn't rain once.
Opening night was postponed by a day. But I came when it opened. Ivory brought her friend Megan. (Megan actually came back later and watched it again another night. Very cool.)
The play started while it was still light but it rapidly got dark and most of the play was done with lights illuminating the stage. Hence, many of my pictures didn't turn out the best, but I think you still get the idea.
I'm not going to give you a summary of the whole play. You probably have a basic idea of how the Robin Hood story goes anyway. This production is a musical, and Pam told me I would be singing the songs for the rest of my life. I agree with her. After having Ivory in the play and her singing them around the house AND going to the play at least seven times, I easily got songs stuck in my head for weeks. Pam's son wrote the music for the play and they are clever songs. Here is some of the Sheriff Raised the Tariff.
Ivory did a great job in her roll. She was a boy who wanted to see justice returned to Nottingham. She carried around her Nottingham Code of Justice wherever she went. She was pretty bold telling thieves what they shouldn't do and also the evil Sheriff of Nottingham was on her list to rebuke. (Although he didn't take any flack.) But no one wanted more taxes.
One of my favorite songs was Naughty. The Merry Men manage to capture the Sheriff for a brief moment. They put him on a Mock Trial for being so naughty. Ivory (as Heathcliff) got to battle in the back with Friar Tuck. He often swung her around or she would roll off his back. It was fun to watch their scrimmages.
Here is a bit of the song, but you can't see Ivory very well because it is so dark.
The archery tournament was very fun. Three of the guys shot arrows over the audience into the brush. Ivory and Ashton had to go look for arrows every afternoon before the show started. I'm proud to say they found every one.
Here are a couple stills from the song the Merry Men sing about how loyal they are to Robin Hood.
Cliff has a hideout and he catches anyone who tries to sit on it. Here he is confronting John Little who has decided to take a seat momentarily.
The hideout was a good spot when things got really dicey. The Sheriff took Marian hostage and Cliff hid with the Constable. (Ashton was a really funny Constable. He was definitely one of my favorite characters.)
John Little had a thing for Heathcliff's mom. They eventually get married and the only one to possibly object was Cliff of course. But she puts an end to that.
Everything turns out right in the end. Robin Hood and Maid Marian get together and the Sheriff is taken care of. And King Richard returns as well. Cliff is ready to take on more responsibility with his new Dad. Look, he's even wearing John's feathered cap.
The play was very enjoyable and I didn't mind going multiple nights. Abby, Ashton, Eduardo, and Ivory were my favorite actors. Everyone did a great job, but those four made me laugh the most. Ivory had such a good time, I could easily see her doing another play with Pam. I guess we'll see...

August 2018 Chatbook
I have never liked the word dump, for multiple reasons, so every time I do a phone dump, I cringe a little. It is a good description, but the phraseology is wrong. So, I finally decided what I want to call these monthly photo posts...chatbooks. After all, people print off their instagram all the time and make them into little chatbooks. All the photos I have from one month would make a fun little book, but instead I put them in one post. So I'll just call them a chatbook.
Let's start with the chickens. Our neighbor got new chicks sometime early summer I think. All I know is that they were small enough that they would escape the coop every day. They wandered around the neighborhood and they would frequently end up in our yard. (In late summer, you would find them eating the apples under our tree.) The girls loved to find chicken roaming around. They would hunt them down and catch them. Some of the kids got very good at it. Here is some proof of their efforts.
Here are the chickens sleeping on the coop fence...still not inside. They must have gotten too big to escape because I haven't seen them for a while.
I went back to work early August. I like to start making copies before school so I'm not overloaded when school starts. This year I went back to work on the 2nd and there was plenty to do all the way up to school starting. Looks at the piles. And this wasn't even close to all of it.
In August it was a year since we went to Texas. The rodeo was going over there and we were missing Virginia. She was so nice to send a care package our way. We sure love her!
Baby Le Grand was blessed up in Idaho. We were able to attend that blessed event. (Haha. Get it?) He is a sweet baby.
June went to a birthday party but she went early and helped make the cakes. I need to take some notes from Zuzu, because she clearly knows how to make a pretty cake. This is what I was going for when I destroyed Daisy's cake. These are beautiful and they were tasty too. June managed to sneak me home a slice.
Kids went back to school. On Back to School night, Daisy found out her teacher loves Harry Potter. They all became instant wizards. They chose a wand to take a picture. Daisy was later sorted into the Thestral house. She wanted Unicorns, but they will switch houses later on, so she still has a chance. (The teacher didn't do the traditional Harry Potter houses...who would want to be Slitherin?)
School started and kids were exhausted. Even though we got up early most of the summer, it still doesn't prepare you for the school routine.
A towel fell behind June's bathroom door and folded itself into such a strange shape. We decided it looked like a brain. You know we thought it was cool if we took a picture...
Ivory came home from Lake Powell with a sunburned nose. It peeled in stripes. Her eyes are so intense.
I'm going into my third year of work at the school. The machines have been persnickety to say the least. They jam and have plenty of issues, most of which I can fix. But we still see plenty of the copy machine repair guy. So, the principal decided to buy two new machines. Brand spanking new. They have been excellent and in general, I have no complaints. But I was sad to see my old friends go. Is it weird that I took pictures of them to remember?
Every summer we have sprinkler issues. (It is just par for the course.) We have had some serious problems in the front corner and Tyler spent weeks trying to get it fixed. He would think he had it repaired and then he would turn the water back on and there would be a problem. One day, he set Daisy to watch the pipe to see if there were any leaks. She came back splattered with mud. It was really funny. Turns out that pipe still needed a little work.
Robyn did Marching Band camp in August. This is a new venture for her. (And us.) Each section of the band was supposed to wear a certain color on the last day. Robyn is in the Pit. They are the percussion that stand at the front and don't actually march. (Can you imagine someone carrying around a marimba?) The Pit chose their color right away (black) and Robyn came home and ordered emergency shirts. Well, we are just cool enough to get shirts done almost overnight. Robyn had some inside joke about snails, so she designed the shirts and we screen printed them. Sure enough, Pit won the section award that day.
After searching for most of the summer, June got a job. It is not easy to find something when you are fifteen. She had several interviews that ended quickly when she wasn't sixteen or older. But she is officially making money now. I'm proud of her.
We met friends at a new park in Vineyard. I chatted with people the whole time, but Tyler went around and played with the kids and took some pictures. These two made me laugh.
Found some more edited pictures, compliments of Robyn. The first one is Ivory sporting the perfect floppy bun and war paint. The second is our annual trip to the eye doctor. Robyn's latent mutant abilities came out finally. (Makes sense, since her uncle is Cyclops.)
August brought some fun storms. I love storms and lightning and all that stuff. We had some days with downpours. I tried to take a picture, but it never does it justice. The rain was coming down like someone opened the heavens and emptied their tub above us. There was even hail. It was awesome.
Two more for the month. Tricia and I went for a walk in downtown Provo. It was such a calm relaxing evening unless you count the fight between the homeless old man and the profane punk kid. (Such excitement.) I really like some of the shops around there. And there is random art that I have never seen before.
Final picture for our chatbook! The girls and I went on a Mother/Daughter temple trip. They go often and I go often, but usually not together, unless you count me driving them. The temple is a beautiful place, and I have beautiful girls.
You made it through my first chatbook. It really is the same as any other monthly picture post. But I hoped you enjoyed it.
