The Library Dragon

(September 2024)

Guest blogger Beau here. Mom asks me periodically to make something for her library display. When she asked me to make something crazy for the back to school, I wasn’t shore how well I could execute her plan, but of course I had to try.

She wanted a dragon reading a book. So I got right to work on a LOOOOOONNNG piece of red butcher paper sketching out a head, body, and tail. Although I am an artist, dragons are not my specialty, but I couldn’t let my mom down when she had such faith in me, and had asked me so many months in advance. I got the general premise down while she worked with some of the other girls to get the book piles ready

It took a little while to finally find what we liked the best. We decided on pink accents with black eyebrows and horns, which you’ll notice is different than the original, as we were thinking yellow.

Mom wrangled me to sit down and work on it when the deadline was approaching and I finally did and produced this masterpiece

Unfortunately, the only picture I could find of it was a close-up. But he had a whole cave and jewels all around. She really works so hard to make the display so immersive and interesting. I think the pun was “reading is treasure” and it was even in sparkly paper! This may be the last year that she has me do this kind of stuff though, because now she can start recycling the past pieces I’ve done because all the kids that have seen it are now high schoolers. She does such a good job!
