Today we’re going to be doing a little bit of an update on Maleen’s favorite child. (It’s Beau, everyone thought it was Beau) I’ve been super busy the last couple of months. Let's start in the summer, shall we? I was working for the Post Office and had recently moved to Provo to be more independent and closer to my job. Right outside my apartment was this swallow nest. Nothing was in it, but then one day there were two birds. They were the highlight of my day. I loved watching them flit around the eaves and then settle back in their nests with their tail feathers sticking out. Then a couple weeks later, there were five little baby birds!
I watched these babies grow from scary-looking skeksis to fledgling to flying. I still remember the day coming home and being so excited to see the babies (as I always was). I walked up the stairs and stopped in my tracks. There was a baby bird lying still on the ground. She had fallen out of the nest trying to fly. She’s still the background image on my phone.
Mom said I should start thinking about college instead of just working. What she meant by that was “I’m going to find a school you’ll go to and FINISH and sign you up.” She helped me find a Vet Tech school that would get me my certification quickly. Only thing was, the school was in Logan. So, after I passed the entrance exam, I moved.
The first day of school came quickly. I was super nervous because I had no idea what to expect but it was so much cooler than I ever imagined. I got to meet Fitz and Mama, the two lab cats that lived at the school, and assisted in teaching certain restraints. There are also many snakes, bearded dragons, geckos, fish, turtles, axolotls, and birds at the school. It’s one of the funnest things to just show up to school and see so many animals. I love it so much.
I got to help raise some kittens that were left on the side of the road too. When we got them, they were so small, but they got big and SHARP teeth real quick. I had the opportunity to adopt one of them, but one of my roommates is allergic to cats, so I couldn’t.
I also got a job in Logan, working in the Deli at Macey’s. You may recall that I’ve actually already worked there, so I was definitely a shoo-in.
I started to fall into a rhythm. Go to school, go to work, shower, sleep, repeat. I hardly had time to mess with my hair and change its colors… but of course I made the time. I’ve had many different hairstyles since this year started. I started with some natural colors, going darker, then adding some blonde. I found that I really like my hair with some red in it, so I experimented with that as well. Enjoy these little snapshots into my hair's spectrum of shades. (Also pictured, my SUPER COOL NEW TATTOO that I bought myself for my birthday) (his name is Venus and He’s a purple finch) Right now, I have the pop of red in my hair, but I think that’s gonna change before the new year tbh.
You’d think with such a busy schedule, shurely there wasn’t anything else I could cram in there, but of course you’d be wrong. The class requires 180 hours of clinical experience, so I got started right away on that. When I started the class, I wanted to go into veterinary exotics; birds, reptiles, bunnies, etc. So I started volunteering at the zoo. Which, let me tell you, is like super cool! I don’t get to handle a lot of the animals, but since I’m a vet tech in training, they do have me do things that not every average volunteer gets to help with. I also got to help with some bird beak coping. I got to hold a bird while the instructor shaved down its beak a little bit. This doesn’t hurt the bird at all, it’s just an unusual sensation to have a dremel vibrating your head. And actually a lot of the birds will lick the dremel, don’t ask me why they do that. Wild birds don’t normally need to have their beaks coped because they’ll do it themselves on rocks and it will naturally wear down with their eating habits. All of the birds at the zoo are rescues or rehab birds so sometimes they need help with coping their beaks. This is the only picture I have from the zoo, so that’s what you get.
After more studying at the school, I think I want to go into marine biology and exploration. This is subject to change of course, but for right now, that's the goal.
Life hasn’t been all sugar and roses though. I actually ended up in the ER (for the second time this year 😬) but I’m alright, just hit me financially to be honest, but hey, not everyone can say they’ve ridden in an ambulance!
And the best, I must confess, I have saved for the last. I have been trying to adopt a pet ever since I moved to Logan. I mentioned earlier that I wanted to take home one of the rescue kittens, but my roommate was allergic. So I was looking for a dog that I could call my own. I went to a dog adoption event and came home with a big dog, but I ended up giving her back because she was just too big for me. Ever since Moxy, I have had a special place in my heart for the small babies. And I didn’t stop looking though until I found my baby. And it is with great honor that I introduce to you, Delphine.
She’s a Toy/Miniature Australian Shepherd. She’s very shy and doesn’t like anyone much, except for me. When I brought her home she didn’t like me much either, but after a couple weeks, she's totally in love with me and her little *not* tail wags so hard when I come home. She only weighs 6 lbs. She doesn’t bite, but growls softly if she doesn’t like what you're doing. She can jump really high too, for her height, and she’s got the biggest, softest ears.
So, that’s the recap for Beauseph! I hope you enjoyed reading this guest post. I’ll leave you with some of my favorite pictures of her, and one last one of me for good measure.
