Chemistry is Magic

The Hulse's invited us to this event. At first they described it as a magic show...then it was a Chemistry show. Then it was both. And that is right my friends. Chemistry is magic. It is so amazing.

I tried to take a picture of Daisy and Henry. They sure love getting their picture taken. Ivory was much more accommodating.

Joshua Andersen is head of the Chemistry department at BYU and every year he puts together this show during Chemistry week. He did a ton of cool stuff. He changed colors of liquids, made string out of nothing, and froze fruit and shattered it by throwing it at the wall. Although he actually dented the wall with the second piece. That was really funny. In this picture the bubbly yellow liquid was purple moments before.

There was glowing stuff, perpetual changing reactions, and re-inflating balloons. But by far the thing everyone comes for is the fire and explosions.

Professor Andersen used Thermite which burns super hot. I think it melted right through it's contained into the pumpkin. It was pretty cool.

Then there were several balloons filled with different gases which were exposed to flame one by one to see how flammable they were.

The finale was a bunch of balloons together. They created quite the explosion. Worthy of applause and awe. Ivory especially loved this evening. She may study the sciences someday. They are very fascinating.
