The Concert That Didn't Happen

Guest blogger here! It's me, June. I think this is the first time I have written a blog post for Mom. Here we go.

For this post, I'll take you through the hilarious story of The Concert That Didn't Happen.

Dad recently discovered a band he likes called Avett Brothers. Three guys with some good harmony, basically. I think most of their music is fine, but I really like some of it. My favorites are Ain't No Man and High Steppin'. Anyway, when Dad saw that they were having a concert this summer in Boise, ID, he decided he wanted to go. He opened it up to Mom, Robyn, and I as well. The Avett Brothers are a little too country for Mom, but Robyn and I decided to go.

Dad didn't touch the steering wheel the whole way up. Robyn and I alternated.

As we always do on road trips, we stopped by a random place on the way up. We found the Lake Bonneville monument.

When we got to Boise, we looked at a bunch of dinner options and settled on the Stagecoach Inn. They had a cool cowboy theme. This was my favorite piece of decor.

The food was delicious. Robyn and I got sirloins, and I also tried prawns, which I had never had before. Dad got a Flaming Yawn. If you say that out loud, it might sound similar to fillet mignon, but it was definitely a Flaming Yawn.

After dinner we headed to the Boise Botanical Gardens, where the outdoor concert was being held. We were surprised by how few cars there were in the parking lot. Not concerned, just surprised. Dad was excited about it. Less cars meant front row seats.

The gate was closed, but we opened it and walked in. The gardens were pretty, but empty. We walked around for about 10 minutes and the only people we found were having some sort of corporate party. Finally Dad pulled up the tickets on his phone, wondering if maybe we had gone to the wrong place.

All three of us stared at his phone for a solid minute or so. Boise Botanical Gardens, check. 8pm, check. June 13th, check. Nothing seemed wrong. Then Robyn busted up laughing. There was only one thing wrong: the tickets said 2021. We were a year early.

We got back in the car and considered our options. We could turn around and get home in the early morning, but we couldn't go back on our Air BNB reservation anyway. Or we could go see the sights in Boise. Surely there was something good to see in Boise.

Dad looked up Boise attractions and found lots of good options. The majority of them were already closed, though, since it was 8pm. All the museums and similar options were out. There was a castle you could walk through, but that was closed too. We drove by the castle though.

We found a huge statue of Abe Lincoln and took some pictures with him. Including a selfie train.

We saw a ton of geese.

We found this cool bridge. It looked super old fashioned and beautiful from below, but above it was a regular street. We walked around under the bridge for a while and we even found a shoe.

Everything was named after someone or dedicated to someone. Most of the trees we walked by had a plaque underneath them with somebody's name. There was this whole park dedicated to Tom and Julia. Their names were right in front of these statues, which confused us at first. Any guesses on which one's Tom?

Notice anything else weird about the statues? Here's a closer look.

After we had walked around for an hour or so, we headed for the Air BNB. We listened to Avett Brothers on the way because it didn't seem right to not hear any of their music after we took a trip solely for that purpose.

We had such a blast on that trip. We were all in a goofy mood and joked about the concert all night. And spending time with Dad and Robyn was totally worth it—concert or no concert.

In fact, we'll have to make it a tradition. We've already planned the same trip for next year. :)
