Poetry Reading

(This isn't really following the chronological order of where I am, but it is Christmas, so I think we need a Christmasy Post.)

On Christmas Adam, we had a poetry reading for our Family Home Evening activity. The Call's came over and participated and it was so fun. There were a few rules, which is uncommon because poetry readings are usually about avoiding rules, but this is what we had:

1) Each person was required to read a poem out of a book I got at the library. It is called One Minute Until Bedtime. I strongly recommend this really cute book.

2) People were divided onto teams and each team had to write an original poem (or two) using Christmas words that June put in a jar.

3) People were also allowed to share any other original poetry they had written before or came up with on the spot.

Naturally we clapped snapped after each selection. As you read, you can quietly snap to yourself if you'd like. Some are limericks, some haiku. All with a bit of whimsy.

TEAM 1 (June and Daisy)

In Santa's candy workshop
The elves were tired of lollipops
And Gingerbread men
And M & Ns
So they finally hollered "STOP."

They were just so weary of candycanes
So they shoved them all right down the drains
They melted chocolates
Smashed gumballs to bits
They said, "From now on, our food will be PLAIN."

Camie and Nate kiss
Underneath the mistletoe
Because they are cute

TEAM 2 (Ivory, Mom, Pearl)

Let's go caroling
Don't forget your scarves, it's cold
Sing with me tonight

There once was a girl named Carol
Who had a crush on Will Ferrell
Every night she'd watch elf
All by herself
This obsession could put her in peril

Hot chocolate is hot
Put marshmallows in for fun
Sip for best results

TEAM 3 (Robyn and Dad)

Fendal Forgot
There were four wise sages,
That had high wages
Each was supposed to buy a present,
To give at the big Nativity event.

The fourth wise man forgot,
He bought a present not,
So when they got to the child
His friends had him exiled.

They struck him from History,
There’s simply no mystery.
Now they call themselves three, instead of four,
And you don’t hear about that guy anymore.

TEAM 4 (Camie and Nate)

Twas the night before Christmas, light snow kissed the ground.
Little Timmy was sleeping not making a sound.

Then bright ringing bells broke the silence with cheers
Timmy awoke, and ran out to see if St. Nick was here.

He saw the large man and to his surprise
Santa seemed unhinged, with a crazed look in his eyes.

And what did Timmy find in this haunting dire place?
Blitzen's charred body in the coals of the fire place.

It was a really great evening. It was good for the kids to practice reciting and reading in front of people. And it is always good to do some creative writing.
